PYAASA (1957)
This 1957 movie by the legendary Guru Dutt is the story of Vijay, an unpublished poet who is in search of compassion after being dismissed and scorned by the people around him including his own family. But when he is believed to be dead, he becomes an overnight sensation with his poetry being ‘posthumously’ popularized.
Set in the post-independence India, Pyaasa is a part of the golden age of films in India and it does not disappoint with its poignant themes, characters and lyricism. It is no wonder that it has a rating of 8.5 stars on IMDb.
KAAGHAZ KE PHOOL (1959)
A rating of 8 out of 10 stars on IMDb, another iconic Guru Dutt movie released in 1959. Kaaghaz Ke Phool is a cult classic and that one movie you can’t describe in words. Semi-autobiographical in nature, this film tells the story of a film-maker in 1950s Bollywood who is disillusioned by the glitz and glamour around him.
A story laced with emotions and human yearning, this movie awes the audience with its pensive storytelling and stunning camerawork. If you haven’t watched this one, trust me, you are missing out a lot.
MUGHAL-E-AZAM (1961)
Is there anyone who has not seen this one? Impossible right… this movie is a legend in itself! Mughal-e-Azam has a rating of 8.3 stars out of 10 on IMDb and it’s easy to see why. The 1961 flick by Karimuddin Asif tells a larger than life tale of choosing between love and filial piety in the backdrop of 17th century India.
The iconic characters, played by iconic actors, are names we all know by heart, the songs and the storytelling have their own special place as well but the costumes and set designs are what give this movie its larger than life and classic quality.
GUIDE (1965)
This musical romance drama stands tall with a rating of 8.5 stars on IMDb and has the Dev Anand in lead role. Directed by Vijay Anand, Guide 1965 is based on a novel of same name by R.K. Narayan. If someone wants to see the genius of Hindi cinema in yesteryears, tell them to watch this movie. It breaks all expectations.
PAKEEZAH (1971)
Just one word- beautiful. Whether it’s the cinematography, the storytelling or the classic songs, this 1971 movie by Kamal Amrohi paints a beautiful picture that is both poetic and heart-rending.
Set in Awadh, the story revolves around Pakeezah, a courtesan who dreams of leaving her life behind when she falls in love. The musical is full of songs brimming with lyricism and romanticism.
