DEMIAN
1984
A popular one and for a reason- 1984 by George Orwell was first published in 1949. It weaves a tale of totalitarianism, freedom and individuality in a way still relevant after over 70 years. If you haven’t read this one you sure are missing out a lot.
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
Wait… let me fan-girl first…
Okay so Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is simply beyond words. A tale of romance written by an anti-romanticism writer, it never fails to amuse and move the reader no matter how many times one reads! Totally not exaggerating but if there was ever a book worthy of being called a timeless classic- its Pride and Prejudice.
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the true gems of English Literature. Set in 1930s Alabama, USA, it tells a story of childhood, integrity, ignorance and the fragility of youth. It was adapted into a 1972 movie of the same name, which too is a Hollywood classic.
AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS
Contrary to popular belief, Around the World in 80 Days is not just a children’s book and anyone anytime can read this book and enjoy it. Jules Verne, the man ahead of his times by centuries gave us numerous classics like Journey to the Centre of the Earth and 20,000 Leagues under the Sea. But even among all these gems, Around the World in 80 Days holds its own special place.
A TALE OF TWO CITIES
A well-known and somewhat heavy-weight (both in the number of pages and the content) book by Charles Dickens- Tale of Two Cities is a story you won’t regret reading once you finally reach the end. It’s fairly difficult to read in my personal opinion, but what a journey! Such a poignant theme, the characters… and oh the epilogue… I can never get over how beautifully written this story was.
THE MURDER OF ROGER ACKROYD
And how can any classic book recommendation list be complete without a work by the Queen of Mystery herself! Agatha Christie’s The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is a must-read for one and all, mystery fan or not. It will, and mark my words, blow your mind!
