Isha Ambani Wedding: How Jaipur band lit the event with Rajasthani songs

The Piramal family kept up its Rajasthan connection in more ways than one at the wedding of their son Anand Piramal. The band that played at the wedding is the famous pre-independence Hindu Jea Band of Jaipur. Established in 1934 this band has the distinction of playing at important events on Rajasthan calendar. The 20-member band that went to Mumbai was not only asked to perform to a specific playlist; they were also under contract to not divulge any information.

The band was contacted by the Piramal family and they had a specific list of demands along with dos and don’ts. They were to perform to traditional Rajasthani songs like ghoomar a playlist of Bollywood songs was also given. The band has a specific wardrobe with several varieties of uniform and the maroon one was selected. They were asked to get new sets stitched in the best possible material and finery.

It was a 20-member band that had gone to Mumbai. Members were not told where they would be performing. “We were told after we reached Mumbai that we were to perform at the most talked about wedding and even then we could not tell our families,” said a member of the band.

But did the presence of so many stars and celebrities put them off balance or rather off key; “We are used to seeing stars and celebrities because we perform at high profile weddings, but this time there were too many at one place. But we performed flawlessly,” said another member of the band.

“Yes we played the band at Anand Piramal’s baraat. The family had seen us perform at their daughter’s wedding in 2009 in Jaipur. But I will not be able to say anything beyond that as I am bound by non-divulging contract,” said Arvind Thandani, owner Hindu Jea Band.

The Hindu Jea Band has the distinction of performing at major events in Jaipur’s history and social calendar. Since its inception; the band has been performing at Teej and Gangaur for the last 84 years; for free. It was part of Republic Day parade too in 1972. Hindu Jea band is entertainment partner for Rajasthan Royals team in IPL.
