Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (1948 -1997), born as Anjum Pervaiz Ali Khan, was a legendary Pakistani singer and musician. His prime forte was Sufi Islamic devotional music, popularly known as Qawwali. He was blessed with an extraordinary range of vocal talents and was capable of performing at a high pitch for several hours. He had introduced the Qawwali form of music to international audiences and gained worldwide fame as the “Shahenshah-e-Qawwali”.

The king of kings of Qawwali was born in Faisalabad in Pakistan 13th October 1948. At the age of 16, Khan appeared publicly for the first time at his father’s chelum.

He had performed in over 40 nations. Apart from Qawwali music, he also had a big tremendous influence on contemporary South Asian popular music, such as Indi-pop, Pakistani pop, and Bollywood music.

In 1987, he received the award of with Pride of Performance for his contribution to Pakistani music from the President of Pakistan.

In 1995, he was awarded the UNESCO Music Prize.

For his exceptional contribution to the art of cinema, he was also honored with the Grand Prix des Amériques at Montreal World Film Festival in 1996.

He also received the Arts and Culture Prize of the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prizes.

In Japan, he was also known as the Budai or “Singing Buddha”.

As of 2001, he held the Guinness World Record for the “Most Qawwali Recordings”, having recorded over 125 Qawwali albums before his demise.

He was given the title of Ustad (the master) post his performance in classical music at a function in Lahore on the anniversary of his father’s death.
