Bengaluru: The 13-member family of Fayaz from Nagarabhavi got tested at a camp held in their area.

The results showed that except for his son and daughter, Ahmed and Kairuneesa, who tested positive, all others tested negative. Even Ahmed and Kairuneesa showed no overt signs and symptoms and did not know their COVID-positive status till they got the results.

Immediately, a team from CFAR, which had been working with communities through the pandemic, the lockdown and the post-lockdown phase of the pandemic, and the Helpdesk, arranged for an ambulance.  However, Fayaz preferred to take Kairuneesa, 19, and Ahmed, 24, to the Corona Care Centre, a COVID-19 camp, at the Girls’ College in Nagarabhavi. The two stayed at the camp for four days. On the first day, Ahmed was upset with the idea of being separated from his family but the father assured him that whenever he missed the family or felt lonely, he would be there to take care of him. However, Ahmed later told his father that he was happy at the centre.

This was largely due to the fact that the camp was well-managed. Ahmed and Kairuneesa reported that the camp was extremely neat and hygienic had all the facilities they would need such as a clean beds, warm water and good food. They were given medication on time. One of them said, “We hear a lot of rumours about the quarantine centres and how patients get injected and die, that there are corrupt officials out to make money through testing. Now, it is clear to us that everyone is only trying to help us. It is about time people stop believing in such fake reports or fear the virus.”

They also thought that one way of encouraging people to get tested was to give them a compact smart card to prove their COVID-negative status so that they carry it everywhere and show it to people who ask for it. From being petrified of shifting to the COVID-19 Care Centre to now totally believing in the system, Ahmed and Kairuneesa overcame the virus with extraordinary courage!
