In view of the confusing situation in the Congress party to elect its new leader and party president, after the resignation of Rahul Gandhi and likely loss of its two government’s in Karnataka and Goa reducing its governments’ number in states compared to the BJP which has is governments in 19 states, the moral of its rank and file is highly demoralized and the country’s media, allegedly influenced by the supposed backing of the ruling party is further leaving no stone unturned to make mockery of the party that ruled the country for more than six decades since independence.
The saturation point of tolerance of various senior leaders and the younger ones’ has also reached its maximum with the party veterans like Dr. Karan Singh, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and party general secretary Jyotiraditya Scindia, urging the highest decision making body of Congress, the Congress Working Committee to elect a new but energetic, experienced and dynamic youth leader as the next president in order to resurrect the party at the pan India level and save it from going into disorientation after Rahul’s resignation, at the earliest.
There had been repeated and a number of attempts by the chief ministers of Congress-ruled states like Ashok Gehlot, Kamal Nath, Baghel and senior most party leaders including Sonia and Priyanka Gandhi to persuade Rahul Gandhi to take back his decision but of no avail.
Finally, the top leadership of the party has now decided to convene the Congress Working Committee next week or so and take a formidable decision to choose a new leader from outside the Nehru Gandhi family.
There are reports that Congress’s senior-most leader Sonia Gandhi and Rahul has confabulated with other senior leaders and come to the conclusion of reaching at a consensus on a new party president’s name at the earliest, so as to put a full stop to all speculations and quickly move forward to rejuvenate the party at the national level as well as in states.
There had been several exercises earlier as well, after Rahul Gandhi’s quitting from the national presidentship and names of Ashok Gehlot, Captain Amarinder Singh, Sachin Pilot, Mallikarjun Kharge, Jyotiraditya Scindia, etc were discussed but nothing concrete or fruitful has come out till yet.
The party seems to be more interested in a young and Dalit face to give an impression that Congress party worries about the lowest ebb of society.
According to the latest sources though the name of Jyotiraditya Scindia was cropped up recently for the top slot but he’d refused and 59-year-old former youth Congress leader, former union minister and a Dalit from Maharashtra Mukul Wasnik’s name is appearing as a forerunner.
While Mukul Wasnik is youthful, a committed Congressman, a capable organizer, and well-read politician, his Dalit background too suit the party tremendously.
It’s almost final now that in a week or two week’s time a new Congress party president would be elected or appointed by the Congress Working Committee.
