Embracing The Light Of Knowledge
It is often quoted that a Guru is like a temple and it is the students who revere it. And today, as we celebrate the pious occasion of Guru Purnima in India, we express our humble gratitude, through the words of this article, to all the gurus and knowledge givers who have touched our lives.
We learn and grow each day. Be it our experiences or our friends, be it our elders or our siblings, we learn from everyone who comes into our life. For those who think that a Guru is only a teacher/professor who educates us, they must understand what the word means. Guru is someone who’s depth of influence is immeasurable. He/she is a source of knowledge and someone who guides us, physically, mentally, and emotionally, on our journey throughout life.
And so, herein we pay our offering to the most important sources of knowledge we have in our lives.
Parents
It is said that a single candle can light a thousand and when it comes to our parents, it is no different. From the very moment a mother conceives, a part of herself is consumed in the process of the development of her child. Not only this, but a father is also no less as he sacrifices his simple pleasures for the upbringing of his child. Be it the way to eat, the way to dress, or the way to conduct ourselves, we owe everything to our parents. Not only in the initial years, but their sheath of unconditional love and invaluable guidance continues to show us the way to lead life even when they aren’t physically present amongst us. Besides our parents, our elders or our beloveds too, in whom we try to find of reflection of our parents, also contribute significantly to our growth.
On this auspicious occasion today, our sincere salutations to them.
Teachers
“गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णु र्गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः, गुरु साक्षात परब्रह्मा तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः”
This Sanskrit shloka translates as – Salutations to the Guru – the Guru who is the creator, the preserver, and the destroyed in one bodily manifestation.
Our teachers, be it in an educational institution are one of the most important pillars of our lives. Be it imparting formal education or be it guiding our future, it is they who are the sculptors of our lives. But, the word “teacher” is way beyond what is generally perceived of it.
Many a time in life our siblings, our friends, and our seniors teach us some invaluable lessons. Be it humility, kindness, or sympathy, these people come into our lives to give it a direction and help us rectify the flaws within. And so, even they stand synonymous with being a teacher.
Thus, on this Guru Purnima, our humble gratitude to all those who shaped our lives and cast away the darkness, that of ignorance, through the light of knowledge.
The Enlightening Philosophers
One of the most beautiful aspects associated with Guru Purnima is that it is not bounded by the manacles of religion, caste, class, etc… It is one of the many festivals which teach us that knowledge can never be restricted to a particular religious sect. More so, it stands testimony to the fact that the teachings of the Almighty are the same across all the books, scriptures, and texts available. Be it Nature or the Omnipresent, be it our spiritual guru or our experiences, everything forms a distinct part of our life and contributes significantly in molding our thoughts, words, and actions, thus guiding us and helping us to achieve the goals of life.
Thence, as we celebrate this day dedicated to our gurus, we thank each of the poles stars in our lives who have constantly enlightened us, helped us introspect, and blessed us to be whatever we are today.
