Founder of Prajamandal Party Trepen Singh Negi remembered and rich tributes paid today
Rich tributes were paid to the eminent freedom fighter, founder of Prajamandal Party during the British rule and two-term member of parliament from Tehri Garhwal constituency late Trepen Singh Negi was today remembered and rich tributes paid to him at his ancestral village namely Falls in Aargad Patti in Tehri Garhwal district.
Prominent political leaders of Uttarakhand and former chief minister and ministers in Uttarakhand government paid their richest tributes to this great freedom fighter, ex-MP and the leader of the masses. The former Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat while paying his respects to late Trepen Singh Negi in a meeting to commemorate the 24th death anniversary termed late Negi as a towering freedom fighter and political personality of Uttarakhand who dedicated his entire life since his school days in fighting the then RAJ SHAHI OF TEHRI GARHWAL against peoples’ oppression and the British thus suffering immensely.
Harish Rawat said that the significant contribution of late MP Trepen Singh Negi in the freedom of Tehri Garhwal from the rule of then Rajshahi and the British oppression could not be forgotten which will continue to inspire the present and the future generations of Uttarakhand. The local MLA of Tehri Shakti Shah assured the people that a memorial would be made in the memory of late Trepen Singh Negi. Several important political leaders of Uttarakhand viz state Congress president Pritam Singh, former MLA, minister and late Negi’ s political follower Manyri Prasad Naithani, former MLA and state president Kishore Upadhyay, former minister Shurvir Singh Sajwan, MLA from Kedarnath Manoj Rawat, former MLA Balbir Singh, Vikram Singh, etc addressed the audience and paid their rich floral tributes on this occasion.
Late freedom fighter and twice MP during the Janata Party government and thereafter during the eighties late Trepen Singh Negi has been greatly instrumental in raising the struggle for separate Uttarakhand State in 1979 and led a massive demonstration at Rajpath Delhi leading to several court arrests. It was from here that the movement for separate Uttarakhand State gained momentum and the regional party wedded to the cause of separate Uttarakhand, Uttarakhand Kranti Dal was born which later on gave a fillip to this demand to reach its logical conclusion in the year 2000. Late Trepen Singh Negi was a known follower of the political stalwart and former union minister and CM UP late Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna. He constantly stayed with him during the thick and thin till his death in 1979.
An eminent freedom fighter, founder of Prajamandal and twice MP late Trepen Singh Negi was a modest politician who never aspired for power and position but selflessly served the masses of Garhwal by walking several kilometers on foot and meeting people to resolve their grievances. He frequently raised the issue of hill people and granting of statehood in the Lok Sabha. He never aspired for wealth and money as selfless public service was his basic and prime motto. He was a true Gandhian leader and was jailed a number of times during the freedom movement.
