Genre-based Anime Recommendations
Table of Contents
When it comes to entertainment, not everyone has same preferences. While some like stories with action, adventure and mystery more, others like well-paced, romantic and musical ones.
So here we are with a recommendation list for one and all! Even if you have very specific likes and dislikes, you will surely like one of these 10 anime as they cover a wide range of genres. In short, a list which has something for everyone but it doesn’t include the big names as everyone knows about them anyway. So what are we waiting for? Let’s go –
PARODY
If you like Parody genre, you must see OURAN HIGH SCHOOL HOST CLUB. Though it has its roots in the Shoujo genre, it’s one of those shows that almost everyone likes. The reason for that is simple… it is a parody and a story full of ridiculous, hilarious moments and yet a deep plot with even deeper characters. Not a second of boredom and the music is quite good- especially the ending ‘Shissou’.
It has been a few years already since I watched this anime and I still go back to it again and again whenever I feel like having a good laugh- it’s just that funny with all the exaggerated expressions and amazingly versatile characters.
ACTION/DEMON
A recent one though its manga has come really far into the story- if you like Action and Demon stories watch DEMON SLAYER/ KIMETSU NO YAIBA.
Honestly, I didn’t have much expectation from this but I watched it nonetheless because of how many people recommended it and I am sure glad I heeded their advice! This story is such a great one with good action scenes, well-written plot and characters that are neither black nor white just human (yes, even when it’s the demons or well most of them). Especially the bond between the main characters made me a bit teary eyed (looking at you episode 19 ending).
SHOUNEN
It’s the genre everyone likes because though it has some clichés it never fails to entertain! If you want to see another shounen anime I won’t be recommending you the hugely popular ones like Naruto, One Piece, My Hero Academia or Bleach. Nope… my recommendation for you is FOOD WARS/SHOKUGEKI NO SOUMA.
Though it’s really, really dramatic with its share of outright ridiculous moments it still has its charms… namely good animation, music, well developed characters and of course the food (it will make your mouth water just by looking). Also, since all the things shown in the anime have their root in reality, it’s really informative too especially if you are interested in cooking.
COMEDY
Okay there are a lot of comic gems in the world of anime but the one I would like to recommend is PRINCESS JELLYFISH/KURAGEHIME. The anime has only 11 episodes and it’s hilarious yet oddly inspiring especially for those with low self-esteem. I can’t express how much I love this show and the characters it presented. Though it falls in the Josei genre, I think everyone should give it a try.
SHOUJO
If you want to watch a clean romance with lovable characters, watch SNOW WHITE WITH RED HAIR/ AKAGAMI NO SHIRAYUKI HIME. No matter if you are interested in Shoujo and Romance genre or not… you should give this one a try. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
This anime has good music, a simple but well-crafted plot, independent and strong main characters and is simple put- perfect. The simplicity yet depth… I like everything about this show. It would inspire you and intrigue you while also making you believe in things like fate and true love. A must-watch anime.
MYSTERY/TIME TRAVEL
If you want a story with suspense, mystery and thriller with a dash of time-travel, 12 episodes long ERASED is perfect for you. You won’t be able to guess the ending until it finally happens and al, this time you would be on the edge on your seat! The show is really well-paced and the plot well-thought. It will surprise you in ways you in way unimaginable and will keep you hitched till the end.
HORROR/THRILLER
Ah… my favorite recommendation. If you are a horror fan, chances are you have already seen this one but if you haven’t watch ANOTHER.
This anime is truly one of the best horror ones I ever saw and that’s saying a lot. 12 episodes and you won’t know how to feel, what to think. It’s that mind-boggling. From the mysterious beginning to the unexpected ending and jaw-dropping scenes- yep… better not miss this one. Just a warning though, watch it on your own discretion and don’t blame me for recommending. After all, if I have suffered others should too! (Evil Laughter in the background)
JOSEI
If you want a good, heart-warming tale of friendship and dreams in the backdrop of beautiful music and poems- watch CHIHAYAFURU. Though my description doesn’t do it justice and it’s so much more- you won’t really know till you actually see it yourself.
Honestly, if I can only recommend one anime for the rest of my life it will be this one, especially the second season. But you won’t understand it till you watch the first which in itself is a really, really good one. The show is in its third season at present and damn… I seriously love this anime! It inspired me a lot and I learned a lot, laughed a lot, cried a lot and laughed a lot again.
SLICE OF LIFE/DRAMA
There a lot of amazing anime in the Slice of Life and Drama category, but I would like to recommend GOKUSEN. It’s about a teacher teaching in a high school full of delinquents but she is not the one to be trifled with!
What I like the most about this show, despite it being so old, is how it presents its characters and breaks all the prejudices one may hold. It’s funny, hilarious actually and it conveys a really important message through its 13 episodes. Give it a try and maybe you will like it enough for a second run?
FANTASY/ADVENTURE
And the last recommendation of the day for Fantasy and Adventure genre- a lot of you must know this anime but it’s one of my favorites so watch YONA OF THE DAWN / AKATSUKI NO YONA if you would like to see a story of determination and growth…. With lots of action and a fantastical adventure of course!
Yona of the Dawn has everything you would want in a fantasy anime- tragedy, realization and dragons! The characters are all well-crafted and the music is sometimes good, sometimes goosebumps-inducing.
