How Does Your Voice Impact Your Chances In An Interview?
Table of Contents
In an interview, there are 3 things that determine the results: Vocal, Visual & Verbal cues
Vocal (pitch, pitch variation, speed of speech, pauses, tone, amplitude variation)
Visual (physical attractiveness, smile, hand movement, confidence, presence, body language)
Verbal (content, knowing your stuff)
In face to face interviews, research suggests the perception of the interviewee is based on
7% verbal, 38% vocal, 55% visual
This means what we are saying does not matter as much as how we are saying it
Now imagine a virtual interview, probably visual perception will go down a bit & vocal may increase
For a telephonic interview, visual cues will go away completely & vocal may become the most important component
These are some common mistakes I made:
1. Using Fillers (ah, hmm, ok, ya, etc)
2. Using aggressive, not assertive tone
3. Sounding overconfident, not confident
4. Being casual, not serious
5. Being uptight, not being easy with self
5. Poor empathy & listening skills
6. Speaking fast
7. Energy in extremes (depressed or excited)
8. Not paying attention & losing focus of the conversation
Recording your interview & listening to it can help.
How are your vocal cues?
