Ultra Mini Scope Technology And Kidney Stone
Ultra mini scope technology helps patient with calyceal diverticular stone in the kidney to recover faster
With old age comes many health problems. Urology related problems can be one such.
Many people ignore the early symptoms which may later get worse, while some choose to get treated in the early stages which can lead to effective treatment and faster recovery.
In a rare case, 62-year-old Prakash (name changed), came to visit his son in Bangalore for a few days and suddenly developed flank pain which continued for 2 months. Alarmed by the continuous pain, Prakash visited Columbia Asia Hospital Sarjapur Road and consulted Dr. Manohar Badrappa, Consultant – Urology & Renal Transplant Surgeon in the hospital. An immediate CT scan helped in identifying calyceal diverticular stone which rarely forms in the kidneys.
Calyceal diverticular stone is a small blind pouch arising from the collecting a system of the kidney and it has a small opening to enter. One in thousand develop these stone and if such kidney stones are left unidentified and untreated it can lead to the formation of pus and if associated with any other comorbid illnesses it can lead to sepsis in turn leading to higher mortality.
Talking about the case Dr. Manohar Badrappa, Consultant – Urology & Renal Transplant Surgeon, Columbia Asia Hospital Sarjapur Road said “The scan revealed a 1.2mm size stone in Prakash’s kidney. Usually, for kidney stone removal, an 8mm diameter hole is made during the surgery. But in this case, we have used ultra mini scope technology where only a 2.5 mm hole was made to extract the stone. This was completed in a daycare procedure and subsequently, the patient was discharged on the same day. The early diagnosis of the condition helped in the surgery and the faster recovery”.
Discussing his condition Prakash said “I am happy that the doctor immediately diagnosed my condition and without any delay, he performed the surgery. As this a rare condition, I was really scared about the procedures. However, the doctor completed the surgery and all the necessary procedures in a day and I was out of the hospital within a day”.
Prakash has completely recovered after the surgery.
