New Delhi: Congress president Rahul Gandhi said Narendra Modi might have insulted his martyred father Rajiv Gandhi but he still has love for the prime minister. Gandhi was addressing a public meeting at Delhi’s Chandni Chowk Lok Sabha constituency and campaigned for the party’s Lok Sabha candidate Jai Prakash Agarwal.

“Narendra Modi insulted a martyr (Rajiv Gandhi), no matter how much hatred he has for my family, I only have love for him,” Gandhi said.

At a rally in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, Modi had attacked the former prime minister, while attacking the Congress president. “Your father was termed Mr Clean by his courtiers, but his life ended as bhrashtachari no 1,” Modi had said, drawing sharp reactions and criticisms from opposition leaders.

At the public gathering, the Congress chairperson also spoke about the minimum income guarantee promise, the party’s poll plank, and said it will boost the country’s economy. “‘Nyay’ scheme will give a boost to Delhi and country’s economy,” he said.

While strongly slamming prime minister Narendra Modi for giving false promises in 2014 regarding two crore annual jobs to the youths of the country n depositing Rs. 15 lakhs in their banks accounts Rahul Gandhi instead assured the Delhites n countrymen that the Congress government will guarantee jobs to 22 people in Government departments n ten lakh appointments in Panchayati Raj institutions of the country.

Former Congress MLA Haroon Yusuf, while addressing the gathering, said, “We thank our party president Rahul Gandhi Ji and former Delhi CM Mrs Shiela Dikshit for attending this gathering in Chandni Chowk. The Holy month of Ramzan begins tomorrow and we are sure that Congress party will come to power on May 23 and bring an end to the divisive politics prevalent under the BJP-led government. The country is going through tough times for there is no freedom of expression. PM Modi is tarnishing the office of prime minister with his mudslinging on the Nehru-Gandhi family.

This family has been serving the nation before independence and Modi is trying to malign the name of Rahul ji’s family. I congratulate our party president for fighting against the fascist forces like a one-man army. Also, on the behalf of the people of Chandni Chowk for choosing JP Agarwal as the candidate from his constituency. He’s a dedicated worker of the Congress party and has served the people of his constituency.”

Former Delhi CM Dikshit said, “We come here to seek your vote. The BJP-led government has halted the development model of Delhi. Till the time Congress was in power, Delhi was making rapid progress in every aspect. I ask you, has Delhi grown at the same pace in the last five years? No. It is high time the people of Delhi once again repose their faith in the Congress party which is committed towards the welfare of the people of this country. It is my humble request to keenly listen to what Rahul Ji has to say and bring Congress party back to power.”

“This country badly needs the Congress party in the Centre to save our people. Whatever progress the country under the UPA rule, everything has gone for a toss. The Modi-led government is hell-bent on destroying the democratic fabric of our country. Farmers, labour class, as well as the traders, everybody is facing a lot of problem under this government.

“Demonetisation, GST and sealing hit the business class in Delhi badly in the last five years. The Modi government never paid attention to their worries. Thousands of families are finding it hard to earn a square meal properly due to the poor policies of the Modi Government,” Agarwal added further.

Delhi will vote in the sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 12.
