Table of Contents
Menstrual hygiene is of utmost importance as it can have long-lasting effects on a woman’s well-being. But in the daily scuffle of life, it is really easy to overlook these issues. Also, though most of the hygiene facts are really common, a lot of people, especially young girls are often ignorant of some really important facts and the implications of ignoring menstrual hygiene. So we have compiled a short list of the Do’s and Don’ts pertaining to Menstrual Hygiene. Though the list contains simple facts, it is always good to remember the small things as these are what affect our health the most. Now without further ado –
DO
Change the pads every 4 to 6 hours
This point can’t be emphasized enough. No matter how busy or how pressed for time you are, do remember to change you sanitary pads every 4 to 6 hours according to how heavy the flow is. Not doing so can result in bacterial infections which are honestly a lot of pain to deal with. Also, if you are using those reusable pads, make sure to clean them thoroughly before using again.
Exercise but just a little
Though exercise is good but excessive or heavy exercise is as bad as no exercise at all. Do go on walks or do some light exercises but avoid any heavy one that puts unnecessary stress on your already weakened body and uterus. Since, it’s at this time that our uterus is at its weakest, with all the extra lining gone, it is better to take care lest you get hurt which, again can have long-term effects.
Keep the area dry
After changing and washing, it’s important to make sure that the area is completely dry. This helps in avoiding rashes, itching and all the discomfort they bring in tow. Also, use the sanitation method you find most comfortable, whether pads, tampons or cups.
DON’T
Be lazy
Light exercise and frequent change is important, don’t ignore them just because of laziness. Ample rest is essential too, but it is different than being lazy- keep it moving! Short walks and light exercises help with the flow and in elevating the overall stress your body undergoes during periods while frequent change abates infections and discomfort. So do all you need to- don’t push yourself but don’t be lazy either.
Use vagina wash
During periods, no matter how icky it may feel, just make do with plain hot water (soap, maybe) if you want to clean your vagina. Using vagina washes or other methods is more often than not an unwise choice during periods as they can irritate the already sensitive part.
