Superfoods: A way to live healthy
We live in an era of trends. Superfoods are no exception to this. It has gained a lot of traction among teens and young adults mostly.
Many people have migrated towards this new trend of eating habits. Though nutritionally speaking, a superfood is not a thing. It sounds very fancy and hence people are more easily drawn towards it. Marketing strategy much? But regardless, we cannot downplay the benefits of some food over others. I guess that is why these are called superfoods. These, along with your healthy diet, provide much-needed nutrition and benefits to the body. Also, remember, there is no ONE food that will unlock the secrets to a healthy body and disease-free life. Everything has to be a balance.
- Berries: My absolute favorite and hence I will start with these. Berries, in general, are a powerhouse, full of dietary fibers, minerals, and antioxidants. The high level of antioxidants makes berries a helpful shield in reducing heart-related disorders. Cancer and other inflammatory diseases may also be a low-risk if you consume berries regularly. So take your pick of strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries alongside others! Add them to your breakfast muesli, whiz them into a shake, or just snack on ‘em!
- Green Tea: Green tea is a medicinal drink. It is laced with A LOT of antioxidants and is slightly caffeinated. It has amazing anti-inflammatory properties. It has the antioxidants to help reduce the risk of chronic illnesses like diabetes, cancer, and heart ailments. It also helps in improving digestion. So I suggest you incorporate this into your daily diet.
- Nuts and seeds: These are a great snacking option (moderately of course. They’re calorie-dense). Nuts and seeds are superfoods rich in fiber and protein along with healthy fats. They have many antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Hence, they make a good weapon to have against heart disease. Typically nuts to eat are almonds, peanuts, walnuts, pecans, etc. Similarly, seeds that you can chew on include Chia seeds, Flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, hemp, etc.
- Kefir and yogurt: Loaded with good probiotics, kefir, and yogurt should be your new BFFs! They have healthy-gut bacteria that help with digestion and maintaining good intestinal health. It also helps in the reduction of cholesterol and also lowers blood pressure. Kefir is a fermented dairy beverage but non-diary options are also available now, thanks to the ongoing veganism trend. - Ginger and Garlic: Ginger and Garlic are very popular ingredients in the culinary world. They also belong to the category of superfoods. Garlic has many medicinal benefits as well. It reduces cholesterol and blood pressure. Garlic boosts immunity as well as gives us a good dose of magnesium, vitamin C, and selenium. Ginger, on the other hand, is rich in antioxidants (gingerol). It is anti-inflammatory and helps reduce nausea and pain. Furthermore, it helps lower the risk of heart-ailments and dementia.
- Dark Greens and Legumes: Dark green leafy vegetables (DGLVs) are an unmatched source of nutrients including folate, zinc, calcium, and fiber. What makes DGLVs a superfood is because they significantly reduce your risk of chronic illnesses including heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Rich in anti-inflammatory compounds, they may protect against certain types of cancer. You can include these into your diet to reap max benefits. DGLVs include kale, collard greens, spinach, etc. Legumes are a great source of protein. They also provide us necessary nutrients and dietary fiber to maintain our health and digestion. Beans, peas, and lentils should be included in our daily intake.
There are man more superfoods you can include in your diet. Eggs, mushrooms, and fish will be amazing superfoods to add to your daily dietary needs. Maintain a balanced diet and a balanced life. And don’t forget to be happy and healthy!
