UNESCO World Heritage Sites Part 1: Hampi

Situated in the west coast, on the banks of Tungabhadra River in Karnataka, is Hampi. A UNESCO World heritage Site since 1968, this city of ruins was once the capital of the mighty Vijaynagar Empire, which thrived from 14th to 16th Century AD. Hampi is a place rich in heritage and architectural magnificence and the over 500 monuments surrounding it hold great historical and cultural value. Beautiful temples, stunning monolithic sculptures and palaces make this city a traveler paradise.

There is just so much to see, to experience- the museums, market streets and dozens of other attractions unique to Hampi, it’s an absolutely must place to visit if you are fond of exploring. The city is quite blessed with nature too which makes it an amazing backpacking destination.

The main places to visit while in Hampi are –

VITHALA TEMPLE

This 16th century structure boasts of rich and unique architecture. Vithala Temple houses the famous stone chariot in its central courtyard. To get to the courtyard, you pass through the main gate- an arch with detailed and beautiful carvings. The main temple which is just behind the stone chariot also houses beautiful carvings all over its walls and pillars, depicting a number of gods in different forms.

VIRUPAKSHA TEMPLE

Also known as the Prasanna Virupaksha temple, it was built during the 7th century AD. It is the abode of Lord Virupaksha, one of the forms of Lord Shiva. The inscriptions on its walls dating back to 7th century and its architecture tell us of the rich heritage this temple holds. The temple has tall towers (Gopurams) acting as gateways, which lead to the inner corridors and halls. Ornate stone-work could be seen in each of them depicting stories from the mythology. It is really a must-visit place for history lovers.

HAMPI BAZAAR

Located just opposite of the Virupaksha temple is the Hampi Bazaar, also known as Virupaksha Bazaar. It is a colorful arena which sells all kinds of things from shawls and bags to artifacts and antique coins.

LOTUS PALACE

Once an abode for royal women, the Lotus Palace gets its name from its unique design which resembles a lotus. It stands out even amidst the brilliance of Hampi because of its different style.

HIPPIE ISLAND

Situated to the north of Tungabhadra, Hippie Island or Virapapur Gadde is a small island. The beautiful landscape and the unique culture of this place is something to look forward to. Where do you think it gets the name ‘Hippie Island’ from? It has a laidback atmosphere and seems a mix of Indian and Western, ancient and modern cultures.See the source image

Apart from these places, Hampi still has a lot to offer to anyone willing to take time and explore the place. Matanga Hill, which is good for a trekking experience and Daroji Bear Sanctuary are two other must-visit places. Also, we can’t forget the Coracle Ride, which is one of the most exciting things you will experience and of course, don’t forget to attend the Hampi Utsav if you happen to be in the area around the time.
