Chakrata is in Jaaunsar Bhavar area of Garhwal represented in Assembly by the former minister in Uttarakhand government and the current MLA and president of the state Congress Committee Pritam Singh son of the former president late Gulab Singh.

Having the idea from the picture of the overturned vehicle it looks as if the driver might be in speed and could not control the vehicle on the narrow road half covered by the landslide. The imbalance vehicle might have lost control in the narrow road not having enough space to go through duetothe road having become quite squeezed due to the MALBA/ the muddy n rocky material of the landslide which are quite common in the hills during the monsoon these days. among the dead are women, youth and children.

It looks as if the travellers have died on the spot after the vehicle overturned in a speed. This is quite a fatal tragedy with the dead being young and below fifty years. It may be recalled that fatal accidents have become a common phenomenon in Garhwal and Kumon Uttarakhand especially during the monsoon months as excessive rains make the already fragile mountains prone to landslides making the roads filled with mud, silt n rocky stones including boulders which take lot of time to be cleared and by the time the excavators arrived or clear the MALBA several fatal accidents occur due to the roads being squeezed, slippery, full of pot holes and certain points becoming hollow resulting in vehicles losing control and thereafter falling in gorges several metres down killing passengers on the spot.

In the last two weeks several such accidents have occured including the one in Tehri where a vehicle fell into a gorge after being skidded due to the road covered by landslide killing fourteen people out of total 18 while grievously injuring three. Number of other such accidents have followed thereafter too. On 2nd July about 44 passengers had died when a bus overloaded with 62 passengers fell in a gorge more than 100 metres in Gairsain, Garhwal followed by a fatal in Bhikiasain, Kumaon, Uttarakhand.

May the Almighty accord peace to the departed soul and strength tothe bereaved families to bear this most irreperable loss.
